Home Setup for our new Afghan neighbors: Family of 9
Date: November 30, 2021
Welcome to the KindWorks apartment setup signup for a resettling Afghan refugee family of nine. In addition to mom and dad, there are three sons (ages 17, 10, and nearly 3) and four daughters (ages 14, 13, 8, and 7).
Your contributions will help turn an empty apartment into a warm and welcoming home! Your willingness to jump in and help is truly special and deeply appreciated by this family.
Please sign up below and drop off your items at the apartment in Silver Spring on Tuesday, November 30th between 10 am and 12 pm. The specific apartment address will be provided when you sign up. If you are signed up to bring smaller items (other than furniture) and it turns out you can’t deliver that day, you can drop off your items in advance on Sunday 11.28 or Monday 11.29 at one of the below addresses. Please drop off ONLY what you have signed up for on the signup sheet! (more is not better, in this case. Thank YOU!)
- 4909 Cumberland Avenue, Chevy Chase, MD
- 8925 Charred Oak Drive, Bethesda, MD 20817
- 321 Reserve Gate Terrace, Silver Spring, MD 20905
- 1700 Highland Drive, Silver Spring, MD
- 5872 Marbury Road, Bethesda, MD 20817
- 13709 Charity Court, Germantown, MD 20874
These setups are made possible by the kindness of volunteers who bring or have items delivered to the apartment (or to the above-designated drop-off locations for smaller items).
The apartment setup will take place Tuesday, from 12 to 2 pm (immediately after drop-off hours). If you would like to help during the drop-off and/or setup hours, please signup below to volunteer (scroll down to the bottom of signup).
Alternatively or in addition, if you would like to make a donation to help with KindWorks Home Setups, please click HERE. Thank you, in advance for your donation which helps us to meet the needs of these incoming families.
Whether you are new to KindWorks or are an experienced volunteer, please take a few minutes to read the information below.
FLEXIBILITY AND COMMUNICATION: We have learned from recent experience that setup dates, once set, can shift and even be canceled for reasons beyond our control. Please be sure to check your email for updates/changes, particularly the day/evening before and even the morning of the setup. If and when changes happen, we will let you know as soon as we do. Please be sure to include your cell phone number in the signup.
A WORD ABOUT QUALITY: We ask that you please donate either very gently used or new, quality furniture and furnishings. We thank you in advance for making sure that all donated items are clean (without stains and 100% pet-hair-, cobweb- and smoke-free) when donated.
LINENS: Please label or tag the bag for all bedding (mattress pad, sheets, blankets, comforter/duvet and bedcovers) BY SIZE as twin, full or queen and bundle sets together — without marking on the actual linens. Unfortunately, we cannot use king-size bedding. As noted above, new or VERY GENTLY used linens are great! Worn sheets and towels won’t work.
IMPORTANT: Please bring only those items for which you have signed up UNLESS you have been in touch and received confirmation to bring specific additional items. We so appreciate your generosity and your understanding!!
IF THE SIGNUP IS ALREADY FULL . . . If you have bikes in working condition for adults or children, sewing machines, or computers/laptops that can be refurbished AND the signup for these items is already full, please email Deb at deb.lang@DoKindWorks.org. Also, if you have sturdy, easy to assemble bunk beds, a sofa (no sleeper sofas please), a dining table or a large dresser that you would like to donate but are unable to deliver, please email Alison at alisonmcurtis@msn.com so that she can reach out to you about donating your item(s) for this or future setup (please do not sign up to bring any of these items unless you can deliver directly or have coordinated with Alison).
COVID PRECAUTIONS: ALL volunteers should be fully COVID vaccinated and need to be masked while inside the apartment. If you are feeling sick or have a fever on the day of setup, please let us know and do not come to the site. In addition, we are asking that only those individuals who sign up for setup come into the apartment. If you are dropping off items (and not helping with setup), we ask that you either carry your items to the door or pull up so that setup volunteers can carry your things into the apartment. **Thank you for understanding.

**as with all KindWorks projects, when you register you do so with the understanding that volunteering may involve physical activity, the handling of sharp objects and cooking apparatus, the lifting of heavy objects, contact with unidentified and unfamiliar persons, and will require the exercise of reasonable care to avoid injury and/or damage, and you agree to assume any and all risks of personal injury or property damage.
