Home Setup for our new Afghan neighbors: woman journalist moving in to her own home in Hyattsville, MD

Date: April 30, 2022

Welcome to the KindWorks apartment setup signup for a resettling Afghan woman journalist. Your contributions will help turn an empty apartment into a warm and welcoming home! Your willingness to jump in and help is truly special and deeply appreciated.

Please sign up below and drop off your items at the apartment in Hyattsville, MD on Saturday, April 30th between 10 am and 11:30 am. The specific apartment address will be provided when you sign up.    Please drop off ONLY what you have signed up for on the signup sheet!  (more is not better, in this case.  Thank YOU!)

The apartment setup will take place Saturday, from  11am to 1pm  Due to COVID there will be very limited spots to help with the setup.  If you would like to help with the setup and are fully vaxed and boosted, and willing to stay masked while in the apartment, please signup below to volunteer (scroll down to the bottom of signup).

Alternatively or in addition, if you would like to make a donation to help with KindWorks Home Setups,  please click HERE

Whether you are new to KindWorks or are an experienced volunteer, please take a few minutes to read the information below.

FLEXIBILITY AND COMMUNICATION: We have learned from recent experience that setup dates, once set, can shift and even be canceled for reasons beyond our control. Please be sure to check your text and email for updates/changes, particularly the day/evening before and even the morning of the setup. If and when changes happen, we will let you know as soon as we do. Please be sure to include your cell phone number in the signup.

A WORD ABOUT QUALITY:  We ask that you please donate either very gently used or new, quality furniture and furnishings. We thank you in advance for making sure that all donated items are clean (without stains and 100% pet-hair-, cobweb- and smoke-free) when donated.

LINENS: Please label or tag the bag for all bedding (mattress pad, sheets, blankets, comforter/duvet and bedcovers) BY SIZE as twin, full or queen and bundle sets together — without marking on the actual linens. Unfortunately, we cannot use king-size bedding. As noted above, new or VERY GENTLY used linens are great!  Worn sheets and towels won’t work.

IMPORTANT: Please bring only those items for which you have signed up UNLESS  you have been in touch and received confirmation to bring specific additional items. We so appreciate your generosity and your understanding!!

COVID PRECAUTIONS: ALL volunteers should be fully COVID vaccinated and need to be masked while inside the apartment. If you are feeling sick or have a fever on the day of setup, please let us know and do not come to the site. In addition, we are asking that only those individuals who sign up for setup come into the apartment. If you are dropping off items (and not helping with setup), we ask that you either carry your items to the door or pull up so that setup volunteers can carry your things into the apartment.  **Thank you for understanding.

If you have questions, you can reach Julie by email at juliegarel@me.com or by text at 757- 639-7702‬.

Many, many thanks! – Julie, Deb, and the whole incredible KindWorks Home Setups Team

**as with all KindWorks projects, when you register you do so with the understanding that volunteering may involve physical activity, the handling of sharp objects and cooking apparatus, the lifting of heavy objects, contact with unidentified and unfamiliar persons, and will require the exercise of reasonable care to avoid injury and/or damage, and you agree to assume any and all risks of personal injury or property damage. Notwithstanding the COVID precautions indicated above, as with any indoor group activity, there is a risk that unintended COVID transmission could occur.
