Students may be able to earn SSL hours for some food distribution activities with Here2Help. Check individual project details for specifics.
Food insecurity remains a pressing issue in the DC area and KindWorks has partnered with two local food assistance providers–the Upcounty Hub and Here2Help–to support their missions by helping to recruit volunteers to assemble bags and boxes of donated food, deliver them to clients, and assist with related food-security needs.
The Upcounty Hub in Germantown serves approximately 1,300 families in northern Montgomery County, providing them with weekly boxes filled with fresh produce, shelf-stable foods, hygiene items, and activity kits for kids.
Check out the opportunities to assist the organization’s effort on this page. You’ll find that the hub needs volunteers age 18 and up to put together boxes of essentials most weekdays, 10 am-1 pm, and to deliver prepacked boxes to the doorsteps of vulnerable upcounty residents most Tuesdays & Thursdays, between 11 am and 1 pm. Food packing at the hub is a great project for groups. Email Carina with the hub at carnaiz@blackrockcenter.org to reserve a spot for your group of volunteers or to clarify any questions you may have about volunteering.
Here2Help, founded as a program for students at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School to help their fellow students impacted by the pandemic, now collects a range of grocery items that are packaged and distributed in weekly boxes to Montgomery County residents who request them (with an emphasis on families in the Bethesda/Chevy Chase area).
There are several ways to serve the organization, including assembling food boxes on Sunday mornings, distributing boxes to families picking up from a Bethesda church on Sunday afternoons, and retrieving donated bread and pastries from a Bethesda bakery Friday and Saturday evenings. In addition, committed Here2Help volunteers can join the group’s team as a home site for packing events. Learn more in the details outlined within the volunteer opportunities linked on this page or email Hedy with Here2Help at hedyesfa1@gmail.com.
