How KindWorks Works
Get to Know Us
KindWorks is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a kinder world by organizing people to serve our community. Our ever-growing network of volunteers of all ages engage in meaningful activities to provide critical support for a broad range of needs throughout the DC metro area … and beyond!
Current projects include
- delivering meals to community members experiencing food and/or housing insecurity through our partnerships with senior centers, women’s shelters, food distribution sites, and more
- cooking meals together—mostly online but increasingly in person—to help supply some of those meal deliveries as well as other needs
- furnishing apartments for legal refugees and others having to start over, leaving the new residents a welcome meal and cupboard full of groceries
- refurbishing computers for students, families, and emerging community initiatives in need of reliable digital tools
As KindWorkers deliver these services, we acknowledge the humanity of those who currently face obstacles. Through this process, we aim to help build a more aware, compassionate, supportive, and equitable community in which all can thrive.

Together, We Make a Difference!
KindWorks targets a broad population in metro DC who can benefit from our volunteers’ kind hands, including the elderly, unhoused, currently or recently incarcerated, students who strive to achieve but whose environments do not have adequate resources, those who are out of work, those facing food insecurity, and recently arrived refugees.
Our projects have both immediate and lasting impacts.
Since 2021, more than 2,500 KindWorks volunteers helped our community in these ways:
MEALS
prepared & delivered
Supported the work of various food assistance providers in Montgomery County, Maryland, by preparing and delivering more than 5,100 meals for women living in transitional housing, senior citizens in low-income housing units, and public school students in pandemic study bubbles.
CHILDREN
benefited from summer fun stuff
Funded and put together “Summer Fun Stuff” baskets full of STEM activities, books, art materials, and basic creative play items for approximately 2,000 children
COMPUTERS
refurbished & distributed
Provided over 1,000 computers to resettling Afghans, Latino and other historically underserved youth, low-income students and families, and those learning English as their new language
REFUGEES
set up in new homes
When pandemic restrictions eased enough for us to resume home setups beginning in the summer, furnished apartments for 81 recent refugees from Afghanistan
community members served
Supported a number of other community initiatives, including vaccine clinics, a program to teach African immigrants how to use computers, and donations of musical instruments to local high schools
Our Roots: Growing Since 2008
The seeds of KindWorks were planted in 2008 when a group of mothers in the DC area organized volunteer opportunities for themselves and their young children under the organizational name MoverMoms. As the founders’ vision grew, they hired an executive director–who expanded the reach of the group to the larger community and identified activities that would both deliver desperately needed humanitarian goods and services while also providing meaningful volunteer experiences.
In recent years, KindWorks has expanded its impact by identifying new challenges faced by our neighbors, including hunger during the Covid pandemic, refugee resettlement, and the challenges of working and studying from home. From our homegrown roots, we now have a broad and tangible impact in our community–delivering essential goods and services, while also sustaining and enriching the lives of those served as well as those who volunteer.
